Ask your possibly naive question here and our community will attempt to help you.
Trying to decide which format is for me, tournaments or cash.
Have they really changed over the years like tournaments have?
My two cents: No matter which book you pick to read, you absolutely MUST have the ability to patiently watch the table and decide whether or not the advice will work against these specific villains.
This will only work against villains who refuse to fold if they've caught any piece of the board whatsoever.
You will see books that recommend double- or triple-barreling.
This will only work against timid, weak-tight villains who will only put a majority of their stack in the middle with the near-nuts.
If a villain does a certain action 75% of the time, can you respond in the correct way 100% of the time and still turn a long-term profit hint: the answer is usually yes.
How big do preflop stacks need to be for you to have implied odds with a pocket pair or suited connector?
How do these implied odds change based on villain tendencies like calling station or weak-tight timid player?
Lastly, there's simply no substitute for experience.
No matter which books you read, it's not realistic to think you're just going to sit down and quickly start beating the game.
Good luck at the tables.
Thank you so much DTCF best books to study poker the response, I really appreciate it.
Well thought out and very informative, exactly what I was looking for.
Of those books you listed, if you were me and a total noob at live cash, which book would you start with?
It's geared toward total noobs who can't even beat.
Good luck and HAVE FUN the latter is actually important advice - best books to study poker let poker become a frustrating grind.
You PLAY A GAME to HAVE FUN.
Thanks so much for the advice.
And I will definitely have some fun, I truly love the game.
The Zen of Poker.
It gives you an idea of the patience required here play poker, among other things The Course Ed Miller.
By far the best small stakes strategy book.
Does someone need at least a basic cash game foundation before reading this?
Does someone need at least a basic cash game foundation before reading this?
Yes, but not much.
It best books to study poker assumes you know what things like pot odds, outs, and such are.
It's also split into 3 sections based on skill level so you can progress through it as you learn more.
Sounds like a good idea would be to read Crushing The Microstakes.
I'm not a pro yet?
I also think best books to study poker better to read one book five times, instead of five books once.
You should of course read several books, but I think it's important to really study the book, not just best books to study poker it.
Come back to this thread one year from now and tell us: 1.
How many of the books you've actually read, 2.
Absolutely no malicious intent whatsoever - I think it'll be an interesting experiment to observe what you're saying today vs.
It's almost been a year, I hope we get the update.

Since this site launched about click to see more months ago, readers of the blog and listeners and of the podcast have consistently asked what poker books I recommend reading to start out.
Well I've finally gotten around to publicly displaying what I think are the five most useful poker books for those working on playing live low stakes no limit hold-em.
Next to each book you'll find a short description as to why that particular book is essential, and these are listed in order of importance.
I personally reference all of the books on a regular basis for coaching as well as my own personal study and consider all of these invaluable resources.
Instead of focusing on one particular variant or aspect of poker, Sklansky covers all the core aspects of playing many of the most common variants of poker.
He successfully introduces fundamental concepts like pot odds, position, and game theory in a way that is accessible to someone who has never played poker, yet still offers depth on these topics for seasoned players.
If you had to just read one poker book, this would be it.
In each chapter Miller writes about a different player type telling the reader a how best books to study poker spot the tell-tale signs of this player, b what the leaks in this player's game are, c and then most importantly, how to specifically exploit this type of opponent.
This is a must-read before stepping foot inside any card room is most different from all the others.
It doesn't actually deal at all with poker strategy, but in how to implement the strategy you'd pick up somewhere else effectively and consistently at the tables.
At first, understanding the game should be top priority for improving as a poker player.
Ed Miller is the best in the business at explaining difficult poker concepts in as plain-language as possible and this book is no exception.
He clearly demonstrates the benefits of thinking about constructing ranges in terms of frequencies, and spends the remainder of the book reinforcing this 'secret' of elite players.
While implementing these concepts into your best books to study poker takes a lot of hard work and can be quite difficult, simply reading this book and understanding his argument will provide immediate benefits to your game.
check this out Applications, Janda best books to study poker expands upon best books to study poker concepts presented in Poker's 1%: In every spot you find yourself in he considers all the different possible options and their relative merits.
Before deciding which individual hands to put in each range, he explains all the theoretically best books to study poker reasons for what percentage of hands should go into each range.
Furthermore, Janda gives copious examples of what he would do with every hand in his range for a variety of different spots, with the accompanying reasoning all rooted in game theory.
For the player already familiar with game theory and ranges, putting some study into just a few of the chapters in this book will have lasting wonders on your theoretical understanding of poker.
While we certainly only recommend books we believe are essential to any serious poker player, we would like to make it clear that we make a small commission on any Amazon purchases linked to from our site.
That being said, these are truly must-reads and their purchase is a great way to support the podcast.
