Thanks for the answer, Denise. However, you are one of the group that blames Bush for everything. While he spent his time trying to right the wrongs of the terrorists, Clinton spent his time in office messing sround with interns, etc. Nice job rating there. But you don't hate him why? Why is Bush blamed for every crappy mess left him by the previous presidents? ie: Bill/Hill. If our so called allies lined up with us this whole mess would have been over long ago. But no, they turn tail and run and leave it up to us to fend off the terrorist bastards and YOU BLAME BUSH. Wrong country? So S.H. was worth leaving alone to his murdrerous ways? What the hell is wrong with you? You are so far off base it will be an easy pick-off when the terrorists decide to march down the streets of Spring Hill, Florida. Then again you may get lucky and one of your famous sinkholes will swallow you up first. If your guy wins, good luck in the socialist system you will be living in, Denise! Oh, and Bush is to blame for some country's labs making bad vaccine? Man there is no end to what he did to us, huh? Did he really start the Civil War? Did he secretly tell Japan to bomb Pearl Harbor? I hear he was there on D-Day telling the Germans our plans. For sure he was in on the Kennedy assassinations. Of late he must have drugged up the Yankees so they would come out lethargic in game 7. Sound stupid? It is what you and your cohorts sound like. GO BUSH !!!!!! | | pink-stuf.com

Frederick Barthelme has published 11 works of fiction.
Among them are the story collection ''Moon Deluxe'' and, most recently, the novel ''Bob the Gambler.
Writers from Margaret Atwood to John Barth have expressed the same feeling.
When I was on my way to see him in southern Mississippi, where he has taught and lived since the late 70's, I got off the plane, looked at the sky and felt immediately as if I'd been there before.
Then I realized I'd only read about this clear, thin light in the pages of Barthelme's books.
The 55-year-old Barthelme, who is known as Rick, comes from a unique family.
He is one of four brothers who grew up to be fiction writers.
There is his famous older brother, Donald, who died of cancer in 1989 and whose intellectually playful stories are still widely read; Peter, 59, who writes mysteries, and Steven, 51, a short-story writer who teaches alongside Rick at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg.
A sister, Joan, is a retired public relations executive.
Rick once called his family the Flying Wallendas of head blackjack stringing instructions -- capturing nicely, I thought, the oddity of his situation.
Although the Barthelme family history is strange enough to write about, that wasn't what had taken me down South.
I made the trip because Rick and Steve had dug themselves what one Mississippi lawyer called ''one heckuva hole.
The Barthelmes claim they actually lost money on the nights in question, but under Mississippi's tough gaming laws, this doesn't matter.
Cheating, even in a losing effort, is an automatic felony.
The brothers have pleaded not guilty, as has the dealer, inevitably referred to in news accounts simply as ''Cynthia B.
A conviction would carry a maximum sentence of two years on each count.
Two middle-aged college professors recruiting a dealer to fix blackjack games?
I had heard the Barthelmes were jokey types; maybe this was just a prank.
At the time of the incident, Barthelme had been at work on ''Bob the Gambler,'' a novel set, in part, inside a fictionalized version of the casino where they are accused of having cheated.
Before ''Bob the Gambler,'' Rick's work had sometimes felt limited by the narrowness of its middle-class milieu.
The new book had not just good writing, more info also a great subject.
Perhaps whatever Rick had done had been part of a writer's reckless search for new material.
table hand motions blackjack so, he'd chosen a terrible place for it.
I went to the County Circuit Court in the small coastal city of Gulfport, where the Barthelmes and Wojciechowski are to be tried.
The accused stood wearing orange jumpsuits with the words county jail on the backs.
Their heads were bowed.
The judge sat with the Mississippi state flag, which still incorporates the Confederate stars and bars, behind him.
If the Barthelmes are convicted, apart from the possibility of prison, they could be dismissed general john pershing definition their university jobs.
Wojciechowski's life has already been devastated.
She has lost her dealer's license, and the two jobs she holds down now make up less than half her old pay.
Who would make such a gamble, and why?
News accounts of the indictment appeared to go a certain way toward answering that question.
First, the Barthelme brothers turned out to be avid gamblers -- and big losers.
That night in the casino was no quirk.
During the previous three years, they had made the 75-mile drive down Highway 49 from Hattiesburg to the Grand Casino in Gulfport on scores of occasions.
These were the kind of losses someone might well be anxious to correct.
Then there is ''Bob the Gambler,'' published in 1997.
His addiction costs him, his wife, Jewel, and her daughter, RV -- who nicknames her stepfather Bob the Gambler after the classic French movie of that name -- their home and their savings.
The point of the story is an unexpected one.
The very disaster that Ray brings on his family helps them rediscover their affections for one another.
It's a love story.
Ray doesn't cheat in ''Bob the Gambler,'' but head blackjack stringing instructions is out of control.
He throws his money around wildly; each time he goes bust, he gets a new advance on his credit cards or a marker from the casino.
RV's college money, the house and the cars all go.
His emotional response to the cave-in is unsettling: ''I sort of felt it was more exhilarating to lose a lot than win a little.
Losing meant you had to play more, try harder.
Losing burned intensely; winning became tepid fast.
Indeed, news accounts of the indictment seemed to present ''Bob the Gambler'' as part of the evidence against Rick.
I had no independent knowledge of the facts of the real case at the time, but on re-reading the newspaper coverage, I thought that what at first sounded like a tough rap for the Barthelmes to beat began to seem more an indictment of Ray Kaiser.
Maybe Rick was only guilty of writing convincing fiction.
I then began to think about the book's backflip of an ending, in which Ray finds himself embraced, rather than condemned, upon losing it all.
It did not seem very likely that Rick's own family would view his casino adventures with such sympathy.
Cheating, I thought, might have been Rick's attempt to write a happy ending to his own story.
The February day on which I met the Barthelme brothers was a beautiful one.
The light was Rick's light.
The peace and dignity of Mississippi seemed intact.
Rick lives with his longtime girlfriend, Rie Fortenberry, and her teen-age daughter in one of those brand-new gated communities out of his fiction, a landscape as continue reading as the lives within it are messy.
He writes about the emotional torpor behind the glossy facade of the new South, the numb shoppers in those new malls.
This is his setting as much as Montana is Richard Ford's or the Southwest plains Cormac McCarthy's.
Rick's house is a red-brick affair with white trim, like a many in blackjack cards how are used suburban bank.
He came out to greet me.
He is mostly bald, with a soft, friendly face and a white beard; he leaves his shirt untucked in the way that heavy men tend to.
Inside Rie made some small talk and then free blackjack multiplayer upstairs.
Rick sat in a sloping modern chair ''my Aalto knockoff'' and stuck out his black cowboy boots.
In a choreography I would grow familiar with, Steven sat down at a short distance from him, on the couch, close enough to be in the conversation when he wanted but far enough away to get his own feet in their pointy-toed boots out there.
He has a thin face and downward-turning mustache, like a 70's antihero.
Sitting there, the Barthelmes told me their how-we-got-sucked-into-gambling story.
It was a tale that they would also tell, memoir-style, in the pages of The New Yorker -- without addressing in depth the charges against them.
Their high-stakes gaming began in earnest in 1995 and accelerated a year later when their father died and left a considerable inheritance.
By this point Rick and Steven were regulars at the tables.
Generally they would drive from Hattiesburg to Gulfport, through the pine forests and past the billboards full of warnings to the God-fearing, get in around midnight and play all night at the Grand -- sometimes five nights a week.
Then they'd go back home and sleep a while.
They successfully scheduled their gambling around their class responsibilities and their own writing.
Initially, they said, they came home winners.
The brothers read up on technique in dozens of blackjack books and tried counting cards to improve the odds but found it took the fun away.
Eventually they just came to play.
Their initial luck -- a gain of a few thousand dollars -- didn't last.
Soon head blackjack stringing instructions were losing, playing more intensely, losing more.
They chased those losses and lost still more just as Ray Kaiser had.
By their estimate, they played roughly 200,000 hands of blackjack.
This was all told with a good deal of laughter, and with only a halfhearted nod toward self-scrutiny.
The gambling, it seemed, just sort of happened.
My questions were met with boyish, good-natured obstructionism.
Me: ''If I said your obsession with gambling was a response to the lack of status of the novelist in modern American society, what would you say?
Steve: ''I'd say you could get head blackjack stringing instructions job in our department!
Rick and Steve's father was a prominent architect and professor in Houston.
Their house must have been a crowded one, one in which playing around with words was a competitive sport.
Rick's friends had told me how hard he had worked to get out from under Donald's shadow.
Underneath the surface, there was also a tension to Rick and Steve's conversation.
But in each other's company, the boys were born raisers.
They were having fun with me and making fun of themselves at the same time.
But they weren't telling me much.
Me: ''Did you get into gambling in order to get material for a new book?
I'd read a pamphlet from the Mississippi Gaming Commission on how to spot a gambling addict, and so I asked them both the obvious question.
Rick responded with the story of how, 11 years ago, when Donald and Peter had both got throat cancer, he and Steve immediately stopped smoking.
What I had to understand was that there was a difference between real addiction, ''where you're on the street and destitute,'' and what had happened to them.
The newness of gambling -- they reminded me it came to the Gulf Coast in 1992 -- was part of its allure.
Rick said, ''I mean, there's some need we have as individuals, any of us, to find something exciting and put a little edge on our lives.
I came to Hattiesburg assuming the Barthelmes might well be guilty.
If so, Rick https://pink-stuf.com/blackjack/encore-boston-blackjack.html still a remarkable talent.
He should just be glad, I kept telling him in the run-up to our interview, that cheating was no longer a hanging crime.
He kept responding, ''Get this: I'm not guilty.
He answered: ''Look, this cheating thing.
I know why you have to ask about it but it just never went into the mind.
We never had any intention or desire to cheat the house.
I asked them if their clients were guilty.
Unsurprisingly, they said no.
Their explanation is that the Mississippi Gaming Commission, which oversees the casinos, is trying to justify its big budget with a high-profile conviction.
I never found any evidence of that.
After a week in Gulfport, a small city about 70 miles east of New Orleans, I was pretty sure that card cheats weren't something local people cared a lot about -- and indicted novelists they had never heard of, even less.
By state law casinos have to float; in practice, this just means that they are moored a few feet offshore, a kind of cheat in itself.
There is a comparable sort of mental divide among the residents.
That may have been why the local paper only ran a brief wire-service story about the indictment and why, when the assistant D.
She is a blonde in her early 40's, and the day we met she wore a green-and-black houndsooth wool suit that would have made me hot in Saskatchewan.
I asked how she'd wound up with this improbable case in her spring docket.
She said it was ''the luck of the draw,'' not noticing the image.
She didn't https://pink-stuf.com/blackjack/blackjack-surrender-rules.html that the Barthelmes were writers.
She planned to borrow ''Bob the Gambler'' from the Hollemans Gulfport is still that sort of small townbut she did not expect to enjoy it.
Central to her prosecution effort will be 24 hours of head blackjack stringing instructions surveillance of Wojciechowski at her blackjack table.
There is always a lot of surveillance in a casino.
Floor supervisors watch pit supervisors who watch dealers who watch the players.
Above them all, hundreds of cameras hidden behind opaque glass bubbles -- which, taken together, are called ''the eye in the sky'' -- send video back to a monitoring room.
The surveillance people look for anything suspicious: someone raising and lowering his bets systematically, someone winning too fast, someone who does a lot better with one dealer than with another.
If there is cause to suspect an employee -- cheating often involves collusion -- surveillance can also use P.
These cameras can track an employee around the casino, looking for incriminating behavior away from the table, like a payoff or extended conversation between a dealer and a customer.
The surveillance of Wojciechowski began in the early hours of Nov.
As a result, Wojciechowski was taped.
After a week, the surveillance monitors noted that two familiar players, the Barthelme blackjack joker in, had returned to her table.
Surveillance officers concluded that when Wojciechowski dealt to the Barthelme brothers, she dealt differently.
The tip-off, prosecutors claim, went like this: Wojciechowski would deal the hand.
If she had an ace or a picture card showing, and therefore a possible blackjack, she would slide her face-down or ''hole'' card over the mirror implanted in the table called a ''peeper.
Then Wojciechowski would ask if the Barthelmes wanted to ''insure'' their bets: that is, put up half the amount they had already wagered on the chance that the dealer had blackjack.
If they ''insured,'' and the dealer had blackjack, they broke even instead of losing their wagers.
Wojciechowski is accused of communicating by the way she offered insurance -- fast, slow, loud, soft -- whether to take insurance or not.
But since the surveillance tapes have no audio, this will have to be testified to by the casino's security staff.
As a sort of base line, the casino also taped Wojciechowski's dealing on Nov.
In these moments, the prosecution will contend, she followed correct procedure.
She asked the players if they wanted insurance before checking to see if she had blackjack.
That is what the jury may see on the tapes.
What they will definitely see in the scenes where the Barthlemes are playing is a heavyset woman in a white shirt and black pants flinging cards at two very tired and dispirited players, playing hand after hand.
They look as if they have had too many Fudgsicles.
The Hollemans will contend that there is no pattern to the brothers' betting.
Sometimes the brothers take insurance and Wojciechowski has blackjack.
Sometimes they take insurance and she doesn't.
Sometimes they this web page take insurance and she does.
The base-line nights of Nov.
The prosecution will most likely buttress its argument with a play-by-play log the Mississippi Gaming Commission wrote out.
The log notes when floor supervisors were in Wojciechowski's vicinity, something the narrow lens of the camera doesn't always record.
This is important, because the prosecution will contend that Wojciechowski changed her game to avoid detection.
A casino security agent signed a voluntary statement the night of the incident saying that he heard Wojciechowski ask the Barthelmes to keep a lookout for her supervisor, a woman named Teri Witcher.
After nine days of surveillance, the casino was certain enough of what was going on that in the early hours of Nov.
They were briefly questioned and then told they were being ''86'd,'' casino argot for banishment.
If they returned, they would be arrested.
A mug shot of each was taken, and they were allowed to go home.
A ring of cheaters was broken up; that's the prosecution's story.
But what did Wojciechowski get for her trouble?
Why did the brothers lose on the nights in question?
No expert I spoke to had ever heard of this sort of scam.
I spoke to Arnold Snyder, a k a the Bishop, a well-known blackjack columnist.
He said insurance was a bet no smart player would make, and cheating at insurance wasn't much smarter.
I then checked into statements made by Witcher, Wojciechowski's supervisor.
In an interview with the prosecutors, she acknowledged a personal connection to Wojciechowski; her daughter had been a baby sitter for Wojciechowski's daughter, she said, and quit two months before the charges were made because she did not like the job.
She then presented a motive for Wojciechowski's involvement, the first I had heard.
She mentioned that she had noticed Rick and Wojciechowski talking and ''flirting'' several times during her shift.
Her ''hunch'' was that Rick was ''stringing her along.
The surveillance log records Barthelme's kissing Wojciechowski's hand after a win.
blackjack online not blocked longtime dealer, he told the agents that having seen the videotapes, he was ''not surprised'' that the casino had arrested Wojciechowski.
He said she talked about Rick Barthelme often.
In addition, he mentioned that Wojciechowski had a signed copy of ''Bob the Gambler'' in their house.
The prosecution seemed to have a compelling if circumstantial narrative.
Was Wojciechowski in love with Barthelme -- or maybe even in love with his writing?
Had he manipulated her into throwing games for him?
After she was suspended from dealing, she called the brothers to ask if they would testify at her license-revocation hearing to clear her name.
On the advice of legal counsel, they said they couldn't.
Had that broken her heart?
Wojciechowski lives in a garden apartment in the town of Long Beach, just west of Gulfport.
She was wearing white pants, a striped T-shirt and glasses when I went to see her.
She looked a bit worn down but composed and sat on a wide chair with the shades drawn.
She is a single mother.
Her 13-year-old daughter, Holly, came in and out of the house while we talked.
Wojciechowski said she was innocent of any crime.
She agreed there was manipulation -- but said that she had manipulated Rick.
It was part of the job.
Even though dealers have no control over how the cards fall, some get the reputation of being hard to beat and others easy.
Cynthia was ''a house dealer'' -- someone who tends to win.
She made up for this by being friendly and chatty.
She had bought ''Bob the Gambler,'' she said, after the Nov.
She enjoyed the book except for the happy ending, which she found improbable.
As for Witcher's daughter, she said she hadn't quit.
Rather, she had fired her for trying to teach Holly how to smoke.
Witcher called this ''a pathetic lie.
When I contacted Glenn Clair, her old roommate, he said the gaming commission had twisted his statements.
He was certain of Cynthia's innocence and added one more bit to it.
He said Witcher told him, shortly after her daughter was fired, that she ''was going to do something'' about Cynthia.
Witcher denied this too.
All told, Wojciechowski impressed me.
She did not seem like whom someone Rick could dazzle into complicity.
Perhaps this whole matter really came down to a petty baby-sitting dispute, a bit of old, small-town Gulfport bumping into the new.
Perhaps it wasn't Rick's literary imagination that had spun out of control, but my own.
Despite all the trouble they've got into in casinos, the Barthelmes still gamble.
After the incident at the Grand, they took a break.
Now they say they play on occasion.
When Rick told me how both he and Steve quit smoking the minute their two other brothers had come down with throat cancer, Steve later amended the record.
While Rick did quit right away, Steve had continued smoking ''six or eight cigarettes a day'' for a while, before quitting for good.
That, they agreed, was where they were now with the gambling.
When I invited them to come play a little blackjack ''on the boats,'' they readily agreed to join me.
To my surprise, Steve's wife, Melanie, and Rick's girlfriend, Rie, didn't prevent it.
A close friend says they have taken a fatalistic attitude toward what has gone on, waiting for the compulsion to burn out.
Rie and Rick moved in together after he had gambled away most of his inheritance, suggesting that maybe the ending of ''Bob the Gambler'' wasn't just fantasy after all.
Playing at the Grand was out for obvious reasons, so we met at Casino Magic in Biloxi, a neighboring town.
I was there at about 9 P.
I felt as head blackjack stringing instructions I were in a bus station.
Steve showed up at around 1 A.
He stuffed the money in his breast pocket, took a break and toyed with the idea of going home a winner.
Rick, with Mary Robison, a fellow writer and teacher at Southern Mississippi, at his side for company, strode in at around 1:30.
I moved my chips to join him.
The dealers, male and female, genuinely loved Rick.
He had made up a little crib sheet with instructions on when to hit and when to stand, which he consulted with a flourish, holding it far away to focus.
He was generous in helping me with my own game, and I liked being helped by him.
Rick made playing cards seem extremely seductive.
Nonetheless, it was hard not to see holes in the mythos: the worn-out carpet, the sloppy dealing.
Yet Rick wasn't seeing any of this.
He was experiencing authenticity, flash, invigoration.
He was there to let a lot of money ride where he couldn't take it back.
There was reality and there was fun, and what he was doing was fun.
If he cheated -- and for Annette Forster to prove this she will have to make the story those tapes tell very convincing -- he did it for the same reason.
Because it was fun.
He was letting a couple thousand ride go here a hand, and under his influence, I was head blackjack stringing instructions a few hundred dollars.
Eventually I went bust, but I stuck around to watch how it would end for Rick, as if I didn't know.
By then, it was past 4 A.
Rick had stayed too long.
It was coming apart.
He put another pile of chips on the table.
He now had a hard 19 and the dealer had a six showing.
The odds were with him, but Mary Robison looked worried, and so did I.
The dealer turned up a jack, then drew a five: 21.
Even the pit boss turned away.
